The time it was about Silver in the Blood

I had just finished reading Silver in the Blood when I saw the sign up for the tour and I was pretty excited. I really liked the book, so I was hoping that I would be chosen to participate. And I was!

Before we get to Jessica’s interview, let’s check out the book!

SilverInTheBlood_005_cataA New York Times bestselling author brings dark secrets to life in a lush new YA perfect for fans of Libba Bray or Cassandra Clare.

Society girls from New York City circa 1890, Dacia and Lou never desired to know more about their lineage, instead preferring to gossip about the mysterious Romanian family that they barely knew. But upon turning seventeen, the girls must return to their homeland to meet their relatives, find proper husbands, and—most terrifyingly—learn the deep family secrets of The Claw, The Wing, and The Smoke. The Florescus, after all, are shape-shifters, and it is time for Dacia and Lou to fulfill the prophecy that demands their acceptance of this fate . . . or fight against this cruel inheritance with all their might.

With a gorgeous Romanian setting, stunning Parisian gowns, and dark brooding young men, readers will be swept up by this epic adventure of two girls in a battle for their lives.

Sounds good, right?

right

1. Where did the idea for Silver in the Blood come from?

I’d been toying with the idea of writing a book entirely in letters, diaries, and notes between two cousins who were from New York, but sent to live in Europe with their mothers’ family for a summer. I saw a crappy movie that was set in Romania, for no good reason, and decided that I would have my girls be in Romania, because I would make better use of the setting.

2. Why do you love Dacia and Lou and why should we root for them?

Dacia and Lou have this strong, unbreakable bond, but on the surface they are very different, and when the . . . poo . . . hits the fan, they react very differently. It’s interesting to see how different personalities react under pressure, and to ponder what kind of person you would be in that situation.

3. What makes a good villain and how did you incorporate that into the story?

I think the best villains are the ones who seem reasonable. The ones who believe that they are in the right. How do you argue with that? And how do you fight someone who not only won’t back down, but might have a better cause than you?

4. What was the weirdest thing you googled while doing research?

The date of Vlad the Impaler’s Night Attack on the Sultan of Turkey.

5. Describe Silver in the Blood in 5 words.

Ladies don’t eat their suitors.

Speed [ish] round:

1. You get the call/email/letter that says you’re being published for the first time. Describe the next 5 minutes.

So. Much. Screaming. Also, I think I ran laps around my house.

2. What three things would you take to a desert island?

A Swiss army knife, a large bucket of Red Vines, and a book.

3. You can only read one book for the rest of your life. What is it?

The Hobbit

4. Who are your favorite swoony boys/girls?

Paul Atreides of Dune. He’s the Kwisatz Haderach, who else can compare?

5. What is the one thing about publishing you wish someone would have told you?

You have to leave your house and talk to people.

6.You wake up and discover you are Bella in Twilight. You know how it plays out. What do you do differently? {Huge thanks to Bookish Broads for letting me use this question}

Er. I only read the first book and it was right after it was published. I don’t remember anything specific, but she was fine at the end of that one, right? So . . . nothing?

I’m really looking forward to reading Silver in the Blood because I’ve never had a book take place in Romania, and I’m very excited to see how Jessica incorporates it into her story! Thanks for the giveaway!

  2. Ooh I can’t wait to read this one! It looks so good! I heard it’s not that historical so I’m not sure if I should expect a historical fantasy or just more like a fantasy. Either way I’m so excited for the Romanian setting :)

Oh and great interview. I agree that the best villains are the ones who see, reasonable! That’s so true
