The time it was about This Adventure Ends

Posted September 16, 2016 by Stacee in Blog Tours, Interviews | 5 Comments

I loved the first book Emma Mills wrote {because I’ll read anything that is P+P related} and when I saw that she had another book coming out, I was prepared to read it.  Regardless of what it was.  So after I devoured This Adventure Ends, I legit responded to the blog tour invitation without the entire email. {I swear, those Fierce Reads ladies must think I’m insane.}

Before we get to Emma’s interview, let’s check out the book.

23Sloane isn’t expecting to fall in with a group of friends when she moves from New York to Florida—especially not a group of friends so intense, so in love, so all-consuming. Yet that’s exactly what happens.

Sloane becomes closest to Vera, a social-media star who lights up any room, and Gabe, Vera’s twin brother and the most serious person Sloane’s ever met. When a beloved painting by the twins’ late mother goes missing, Sloane takes on the responsibility of tracking it down, a journey that takes her across state lines—and ever deeper into the twins’ lives.

Filled with intense and important friendships, a wonderful warts-and-all family, shiveringly good romantic developments, and sharp, witty dialogue, this story is about finding the people you never knew you needed.

Sounds good, right?

right

1. Please give the elevator pitch for This Adventure Ends.

A girl finds love and friendship through a quest for a missing painting.

2. Where did the idea come from?

One of my very favorite books is FROM THE MIXED UP FILES OF MRS. BASIL E. FRANKWEILER by E.L. Konigsburg. THE MIXED UP FILES tells the story of a young girl who hides away in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and becomes obsessed with confirming the identity of a statue that may or may not have been carved by Michelangelo. This definitely served as part of the inspiration for THIS ADVENTURE ENDS—the idea of a girl becoming obsessed with a piece of art and then learning about herself through that obsession.

3. What made you choose to write about fandom?

I absolutely love fandom. Fan fiction, fan videos, graphics, fan art— I love all it. I’m kind of a late bloomer when it comes to online fandom, but when I discovered it (fan fiction, in particular) I became consumed! It was easy to write about something that I love and something that I’ve become so invested in.

4. Why do you love Sloane and why should we root for her?

I love Sloane because she’s a passionate person—the kind of person who is capable of loving deeply, but hasn’t quite realized that yet. She’s a little isolated when it comes to friendships; I hope people root for her to grow and to figure out how to connect to the people around her.

5. There’s a great group of characters here. Excluding Sloane, who was the easiest and hardest to work with and why?

Frank was definitely easiest to work with! He was such a fun character to write, and I had a great time thinking of different ways to weave his name into things (Franksgiving, Franktioned, etc!).  Aubrey was probably the hardest to write; I think this was in part because it’s a story from Sloane’s point of view, and throughout the course of the book, Aubrey is the most opaque to Sloane. I wanted to make sure that the reader understood enough about Aubrey, but was limited by the bounds of what Sloane knew about her.

Speed [ish] round:

1. You get the call/email/letter that says you’re being published for the first time. Describe the next 5 minutes.

For the sale of my first novel, FIRST & THEN, my agent called me at work. Afterward I went into a stairwell, called my mom, and cried!

2. What three things would you take to a desert island?

1) A fire starter

2) S’mores fixings

3) Harry Styles

(My choices here skew away from “survival” and more toward “having an awesome time.”)

3. You can only read one book for the rest of your life. What is it?

This is like choosing among my children. If I had to—had to—pick, I’d say PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen.

4. Who is your favorite book boyfriend and book BFF?

Book boyfriend: Levi from FANGIRL. He’s the guy I wish I met in college!

Book BFF: Elizabeth from PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. She has a great sense of humor, and she always looks out for the people she loves.

5. What is the one thing about publishing you wish someone would have told you?

I know what I’d tell myself—if I could travel back to the early rejections, I would say hey, it will all work out!

6. You wake up and discover you are Bella in Twilight. You know how it plays out. What do you do differently? {Huge thanks to Bookish Broads for letting me use this question}

I would probably search for a way to turn Edward back into a human; I would prefer that over me turning into a vampire!
