The time it was about Illusion

When I saw the blog tour invitation for Illusion by Martina Boone, I couldn’t sign up fast enough.  I read and loved the previous two books in the series and after that ending in Persuasion, I was dying to get my hands on the last book.

Since I was able to interview Martina for Persuasion, I came up with a new set of questions.  But before we get to today’s interview, let’s check out the book!

9Title: Illusion (Heirs of Watson Island #3)
Author:
Martina Boone
Release Date: October 25, 2016
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: 480
Get it: Indiebound | Barnes & Noble | Amazon | TBD

Barrie must rescue her beloved and her family from evil spirits in the masterful conclusion to the Heirs of Watson Island trilogy.

Caged by secrets all around her and haunted by mistakes that have estranged her from Eight Beaufort, Barrie Watson is desperate to break the curse that puts her family in danger—without breaking the beautiful magic that protects Watson’s Landing. To do that, she must heal the rifts that have split the families of the island apart for three hundred years, unravel the mystery of the Fire Carrier and the spirits he guards, and take control of forces so deadly and awe-inspiring they threaten to overwhelm her.

With the spirits that cursed Watson Island centuries ago awake and more dangerous than ever, she finds an unlikely ally in the haunting and enigmatic Obadiah, whose motivations and power she still can’t read—or trust. His help comes at a price, however, plunging Barrie into a deadly maze of magic and wonder, mystery and intrigue that leads through history to places she never imagined she could go.

Sounds good, right?

1. Please give the elevator pitch for The Heirs of Watson Island series.

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse. Or basically GILMORE GIRLS meets HART OF DIXIE meets SUPERNATURAL. Or BEAUTIFUL CREATURES meets THE RAVEN BOYS.

2. You have a fairly large cast of characters.  Who was the easiest and hardest to work with and why?

In the first book, the easiest was Mark, who is basically a mix of Ru Paul and Whoopie Goldberg and so, so wise and loving that I want him to be real and living with me. In the second book, Obadiah, the mysterious magician who has lived since before the Civil War and studied magic all around the world came to me fully formed. In the third book, Kate Beaufort was the easiest. Like the others, she just was, and I never had to worry about capturing her right. The hardest was Barrie. She has so much baggage, poor girl, and she’s so caught up in trying to do the right thing while trying to balance what is right for her against what’s right for the people around her.

3. Without spoilers, what was your favorite scene to write?

In ILLUSION, the scene where Eight teaches Barrie to dance in the kitchen. My love for Eight Beaufort knows no bounds.

4. Were there any scenes that you had to cut that you wish could have stayed?

Hmmh. I cut a lot at the beginning of ILLUSION, but all of the important bits went into other scenes.

5. What will you miss most about this series?

Barrie and Eight and the yunwi.

6. Which book do you wish you could read again for the first time?

I say this often, but the book of my teenage heart is THE SCORPIO RACES by Maggie Stiefvater. If I could give that book to my teenage self, it would have been the best gift EVER.

7. If you could have dinner with any 3 fictional characters, who would they be?

Karou from DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, Zuzana from NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS, and Marie-Laure from ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE.

8. Are you a pantser or a plotter?

Plantser. Mostly enough to land face first in the dirt.

9. If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing?

Solving problems for other people. That’s the common denominator for all the different jobs I’ve had in my life. Basically, I have a big mouth and I’m not afraid to use it.

unnamedMartina Boone was born in Prague and spoke several languages before learning English. Her first teacher in the U.S. made fun of her for not pronouncing the “wh” sound right, so she set out to master “all the words”—she’s still working on that! In the meantime she’s writing contemporary fantasy set in the kinds of magical places she’d love to visit.

If you like romance steeped in mystery, mayhem, Spanish moss, and a bit of magic, she hopes you’ll look forward to meeting Barrie, Eight, Cassie, Pru, Seven and the other characters of Watson Island.

I love your blog with your reviews that bring new stories to my attention like Heirs of Watson Island and so many others. I enjoy your interviews and the questions you ask. Now you have even given me another blogger to check out, Irish Banana Review. She reviewed Heartless and The Witches. Definitely my type of reading. Thanks for sharing your opinions and all the effort you put into this site. It is greatly appreciated.

I can’t believe the journey is about to be over!! I’m so emotional. I’ve loved these two over the first two books and the scenery is so vivid. So excited. :)
