When the invite came to be part of the blog tour for Ever the Hunted came, I was pretty excited.  I had really enjoyed the book and couldn’t wait to ask Erin some questions.

Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

Sounds good, right?

1. Please give the elevator pitch for Ever the Hunted.

After Britta’s father is killed, she’s left to survive in the Ever Woods. But when she’s caught poaching, the High Lord of Malam offers her a deal: track down her father’s killer in exchange for her life. Only, the accused is Cohen McKay, Britta’s one friend. To spare both their lives, Britta must to figure out who the real murderer is and hunt him down.

2. Where did the idea come from?

There wasn’t one specific event that inspired this book. But I can tell you what inspired the hunting. When I worked as a wedding photographer, my photography assistant, Madalyn, was an avid hunter. On a trip to New Zealand, she mentioned she wanted to hunt a red stag. And I was like, what in the world? I’d never hunted anything. The thought sickened me a little. Well, my shock led to a lengthy conversation about hunting…which eventually fed some of the ideas for this book.

3. Why do you love Britta and why should we root for her?

Britta is capable and courageous and knows how to protect herself, as well as others. What I love most about her is she thinks she’s strong. And when it comes to survival, that may be true. But her weakness is her choice to live alone. Solitude isn’t doing anything good for her. I love that while she’s stubborn and resilient, she accepts new things and is constantly learning. In the book, she learns the need for good friendships.

4. What makes a good villain and how did you incorporate that into EtH?

The best villain’s have good reasons for doing bad things. It’s that simple. While I don’t want to give away much, the villain in Ever The Hunted believes he’s doing what is best for himself and the country.

5. Without spoilers, what was your favorite scene to write?

Ah, this is such a hard question to answer. I have a few favorites. But if I tell you about those, I’ll give away all the secrets. So my next favorite is the end. Writing a book is so ridiculously hard. Like rip your hair out, eat buckets of candy and drown in Coke Zero hard. Writing The End on a manuscript is the best feeling in the world! I wanted to run around, scream, and jump up and down.

Speed [ish] round:

1. You get the call/email/letter that says you’re being published for the first time. Describe the next 5 minutes.

This pretty much sums it up:

What? What? What? Nooooo. Wait, me? My book? You’re telling me my book? Tears fall. An ugly snort. They seriously want to buy my book? A scream. Some laughing. Another scream. Then tears.

2. What three things would you take to a desert island?

Oh, I love this question. A pot, a knife, and Chris Pratt. (I’d need someone to talk to.)

3. You can only read one book for the rest of your life. What is it?

Red Rising by Pierce Brown. That book blows my mind.

4. What book character would you want to date and who would you want to be your BFF?

OH! This is so hard to narrow it down. I love Rhysand from A Court of Mist and Fury, so if I wasn’t married, I’d want to date him. For a best friend, I would want it to be Penryn from Angelfall because she’s tough, clever, and funny.

5. What is the one thing about publishing you wish someone would have told you?

I wish someone would’ve stopped me from querying before my book was fully edited. For another book I wrote, I queried too early and received a lot of rejections. I was miserable. I should’ve waited and made it the best book I could before sending it out.

6. You wake up and discover you are Bella in Twilight. You know how it plays out. What do you do differently? {Huge thanks to Bookish Broads for letting me use this question}

Choose Jacob.

erinErin Summerill was born in England. After spending years bouncing between Air Force bases in Hawaii, England, and California, her family settled in Utah, where Erin graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. She had aspirations to write the next great American novel, but writing proved tougher than she first thought. So she grabbed a Nikon and became a professional photographer while crafting manuscript after manuscript. The scenic detour of shooting weddings across the United States, as well as internationally, provided world-building inspiration. It gave her the vision to draft her debut YA fantasy, EVER THE HUNTED. Now when she isn’t writing, or shooting a wedding, she’s chasing her four kids, two dogs, one cat, and five chickens. This could be why she downs massive amounts of Coke Zero and Hot tamales.

  1. I really enjoyed her book and would love to own it, especially signed!
I saw the book available on the shelf already at Barnes and Noble, and if I had the money I would have nabbed it. But alas, no job and Christmas means only enjoying my Netgalley copy. But at least it has the pretty cover on my eBook, unlike some galleys, right?

I love her answer for what makes a good villain, and I can’t wait to see who it is in this book! Thanks for asking such fabulous questions, it was a fun interview to read!

Erin, I have been longing since I first heard of this book to explore its story. Thanks for this chance to win. One more question: your instagram account appears to be defunct; is there another social media account you’d like us to connect with for giveaway points and social media funs? ;-) Season’s best to all, Kara S
