I received an invitation to read The Enchantment of Emma Fletcher and while I don’t normally read angsty books, there was just something about this one that intrigued me. So after reading it and really enjoying it, I happy accepted the invitation to be part of the blog tour and interview the author, LD Crichton.
Before we get to LD’s answers, let’s check out the book!

1. Please give the elevator pitch for The Enchantment of Emma Fletcher.
A young woman running from her past finds the strength to face her demons with the help of both new and old friends while unexpectedly finding love in the process.
2. Where did the idea come from?
I don’t remember any particular thing sparking the idea. There was no sudden epiphany or dream or any other inspirational prompting. What I do remember is that I’d been on a romance-reading binge, and I kept thinking to myself that these female protagonists really needed to step up. That we were women for goodness sakes, and we needed to roar!
There were too many damsels in distress being saved. I wanted to do something different, so I decided to write my own story where my damsel was broken (as sometimes we all are) but finds it within herself to be her own hero.
3. Why do you love Emma and Tristan and why should we root for them?
I adore Emma because despite going through something awful she ends up making peace with her fears. She reminds me that even when things feel hopeless, it’s within all of us to find courage and perseverance to carry on and make a change for the better.
Tristan and I could be BFFs for our undeniable love of both coffee and bacon. More seriously though, I love Tristan because he reminds me that sometimes the cards we’re dealt are beyond our control but that broken hearts don’t stay broken forever and as long as we’re willing to be vulnerable, magic can happen.
I think we should root for them both because they teach us that despite the circumstances life may throw down, human connection has the power to transform us which is a very real truth.
4. There’s a great group of characters in this story. Who was the easiest and the hardest to work with and why?
The hardest to work with was Emma because of what brings her to Stonefall in the first place. As a woman, there were times in the process where I had to stop because what happened to her is almost too horrible to imagine. Her anguish, her sadness, and her burden was a lot to carry.
The easiest was definitely Mateo. He’s a bit of a paradox because on the outside he’s this incredible physical force that can be downright lethal, yet inside, he’s hopelessly loyal, devoted, and witty with this massive heart that he refuses to silence. And I admire that.
5. Without spoilers, what scene was your favorite to write?
The moment Tristan looks at a sleeping Emma and decides the only way to save her is to teach her to save herself.
Speed [ish] round:
1. You get the call/email/letter that says you’re being published for the first time. Describe the next 5 minutes.
I cry. I call my dad. He cries. I cry some more. I wipe the mascara from my eyes because I’m now a complete mess then proceed to race around my place of employment, and tell any and all of my coworkers that I can’t quit yet, but oh my god, maybe one day I can. I ask them if they’d like me to sign stuff for them in advance, so when I quit my job in the future, they can auction my autograph off on eBay to pay for a steak dinner. They poke fun at my over zealous nature and offer words of congratulations. I return to my desk, call every single person I know, then smile to myself and think, “that just happened.”
2. What three things would you take to a desert island?
I’m a Pisces, so as much as I should say something practical, like matches, a knife and a water purifier, I have to go with the dreamer answer: A kindle with an unlimited charge and at least 25,000 books, a coffea plant, (because I’m going to need the coffee beans) and my makeup bag… just because I’m on a desert island, doesn’t mean I can’t rock my ruby red lipstick.
3. You can only read one book for the rest of your life. What is it?
Something classic like Pride and Prejudice or The Great Gatsby. Actually, if I’m reading something on repeat for the rest of my life (hopefully many years to go), I need it to be able to expand my brain every single time I turn it’s pages. With that in mind, I suppose I’d choose a book on philosophy. No particular book. Whether it’s Plato, Friedrich Nietzsche, or Aristotle, something that will make me think, and when I think I’m done thinking, it’d make me think again.
4. What book character would you want to date and who would you want to be your BFF?
Going to pretend age doesn’t matter. I don’t usually go for blondes, but I want to date Jace from the Mortal Instruments, because he’s sassy, bad to the bone, has quick wit and makes my heart flutter. And if he’s a demon hunting bad***, then I can be 16 again.
As for my BFF, can I pick Chewbacca, even though he was technically in a film first? I may or may not love Star Wars and I may or may not have a soft spot in my heart for Chewie. He’s fiercely loyal and a good listener…what more could you possibly want from a bestie?
5. What is the one thing about publishing you wish someone would have told you?
That nothing worth having happens overnight. It’s a long process filled with opportunities to grow and learn. Remember to enjoy every second.
6. You wake up and discover you are Bella in Twilight. You know how it plays out. What do you do differently? {Huge thanks to Bookish Broads for letting me use this question}
I get a restraining order against Edward after he admits to watching me sleep and to the fact that he wants to drink my blood, but that doesn’t work because for some reason, I’m under his spell. When his skin glistens in the sunlight, I promptly take his car and drive him from Forks to Port Angeles for a spray tan, because no man of mine is going to sparkle. When James attacks me in the end, I come prepared (because I’m hanging out with good vampires, so it’s reasonable to assume there are bad ones) with a wooden stake that I drive straight through his heart, thereby saving myself.
Note: I actually really enjoyed reading Twilight, but this question was just too hard to resist. :)
