The time it was about Blacksouls

After reading Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman and getting that ending, I couldn’t wait to get my greedy hands on a copy of the sequel.  And now I’ve read it, loved it, and I’m eagerly hoping there will be more.  So of course when I got the email about the blog tour for Blacksouls, I couldn’t sign up fast enough.

Before we get to Nicole’s interview, let’s check out the book!

Nicole Castroman brings the dangerous pirate ports of the Caribbean to life in this vibrant sequel to Blackhearts—the reimagined origin story of history’s most infamous pirate, Blackbeard.

Edward “Teach” Drummond is setting sail to the Caribbean as first mate on the most celebrated merchant ship in the British fleet—until he rebels against his captain. Mutiny is a capital offense and Teach knows it could cost him his life, but he believes it worth the risk in order to save his crew from the attacking Spanish ships.

Sailing on the same blue waters, Anne barely avoids the Spanish attack, making it safely to Nassau. But lawless criminals, corrupt politics, and dangerous intentions fill the crowded streets of this Caribbean port. Soon, Anne discovers that the man entrusted to keep the peace is quite possibly the most treacherous of them all—and he just happens to hold Teach’s fate in his terrifying hands.

Life and death hang in the balance when Teach and Anne are given a dangerous mission. It’s a mission that will test their love, loyalty and devotion, forcing them down a path neither one could have ever imagined.

Sounds good, right?

1. Please give the elevator pitch for Blacksouls.

I use the same elevator pitch for Blacksouls as I did for Blackhearts. Makes things easier. :) It’s a Blackbeard origin story.

2. How have Anne and Teach changed from Blackhearts?

Both Anne and Teach recognize that they’ve left the “civilized” shores of England behind. The West Indies are lawless and untamed. Because the two of them are resilient, they’ve learned to adapt to their surroundings.

3. What makes a good villain and how did you incorporate that in the story?

A good villain has proper motivation. A reason for him to act like he does. When bad things happen, do we learn from the experience and move on? Or do we become bitter, our maturation stunted? Do we then want bad things to happen to other people? I think THAT is what makes a proper villain. A real person who had something bad happen to them and they never moved on from that.

4. Without spoilers, what was your favorite scene to write?

Oh, this is a hard one. I have to be honest, I LOVE when Anne and Teach share screen time. But I’ve introduced some new characters who I hope people will love as much as they already love Anne and Teach. So, to answer your question, I can’t pick a favorite.

5. What’s next for you?

At the moment, I’m not at liberty to say. But I hope I can share something SOON.

Speed {ish} round:

1. What is your current guilty pleasure?

I love to watch the Great British Baking Show. But now that it’s no longer on the BBC, I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy it as much. That show is utter perfection.

2. What was the last book you rated 5 stars?

Valiant by Lesley Livingston

3. Is there something you like to eat or drink while writing?

Water. Lots and lots of water.

4. Are you a pantser or a plotter?

I was a panster, but now that I’m on deadline, I’ve become somewhat of a plotter. But the book still surprises me sometimes.

Nicole was lucky enough to come with her very own best friend…she has a twin sister who can read her mind and finish her sentences for her.

At the age of 13, she went to Europe for the first time and it changed her life. She loves learning about different people, languages and cultures and speaks fluent German. She knows enough Spanish to get herself into trouble and can still read the Cyrillic alphabet from when she studied Russian.

She received her B.A. from Brigham Young University and has lived in Germany, Austria and two different places called Georgia. One is located on the Black Sea. The other is the state of Georgia where she now lives with her handsome husband and two beautiful children who continue to amaze her.

  1. I loved learning more about Nicole Castroman! I preordered Blackhearts last year but I’ve been saving a lot of books until the second comes out to marathon them(to avoid having to wait so long and having to reread) my husband is obsessed with all things pirate and wants to read it as well. I’m also adding Valiant to my tbr after reading this!
